Dr. Hernán Vásquez Fellowship for a Doctoral Dissertation

The Dr. Hernán Vásquez Fellowship for a Doctoral Dissertation, a grant of twelve thousand dollars, will be awarded to the candidate whose plan for a dissertation on the poetry of David Rosenmann-Taub is judged worthiest by the advisors.

A letter of intent is required before an application for a fellowship is invited. The letter should be three to four typewritten pages in length and should describe the dissertation topic and approach, as well as the candidate’s schedule for completing the dissertation. The board of advisors will review the letter of intent shortly after its receipt and the Foundation will advise the student if a full application should be submitted.

Eligibility Requirements

• Candidates for the fellowship must be in the final phase of their doctoral program.
• Submission of a letter of intent is required before a complete application for a fellowship is invited. A letter of intent does not constitute an application for a fellowship.
• Candidates who submit a letter of intent will be notified within thirty days of its receipt as to whether they qualify to submit a complete application for the fellowship.
• The dissertation may address any aspect of the poetry of David Rosenmann-Taub.
• The dissertation must fulfill all requirements for a Ph. D. specified by the student’s university.
• Complete applications will require full academic records, a letter of commitment of a qualified faculty advisor, a detailed outline of the student’s dissertation, and three letters of recommendation.
• The Fellowship  is in addition to and independent of other financial aid the student may obtain.

Evaluation Criteria

• Dissertation topic, its relevance, originality, depth, and proposed methodology.
• Academic qualification of candidate and thesis advisor.
• Degree to which candidate is approaching the all but dissertation phase of his or her Ph.D. studies.

Letter of Intent Information:

1. Name, address (postal and email), and phone number(s) of student.
2. Name of the university and department where enrolled.
3. Brief academic resume.
4. The student's plan and schedule to complete the Ph.D. program.
5. Name, title, address, e-mail and telephone number of student’s thesis advisor.
6. In an electronic file (“Word” or “PDF”), a letter of intent, of three to four pages, that describes the proposed thesis topic, its significance, the planned approach, the method of research, and the reasons why the topic was selected.
7. A letter from the student’s advisor approving the dissertation topic, the approach, and the student’s timetable for completing his or her Ph.D. requirements.
